The National Stud in Kladruby nad Labem

Whenever anyone mentions a Czech horse breed, everybody is sure to imagine the Kladruber grey and black with their typical arched head. The National Stud in Kladruby nad Labem is one of the oldest stud farms in the world. And despite the demanding moments in history, it is still the home and the breeding centre for the original Czech breed of Kladruber horse. The grey horses can be found in Kladruby nad Labem, while the breeding of the black horses is concentrated in nearby Slatiňany. Tours of the National Stud in Kladruby nad Labem definitely have something to offer to children and adults alike. There are several possible tour circuits. You can visit the stables, where you will see a group of mares and their foals, which are interesting for their black fur that gradually turns white with age, and the stabled stud stallions. It is also possible to for the château in Kladruby nad Labem, where you will find several chambers furnished in the style of the period of Emperor Franz Joseph I. The circuit dedicated to the Gamekeeper’s Lodge is also worth visiting, as this is one of the oldest log cabins in the region. In addition, there is also the option of trying out virtual reality in the carriage riding simulator. There is an educational trail in the environs, which is approximately five kilometres long and includes a number of informative panels with points of interest from the breeding and training of carriage horses in Kladruby nad Labem, for those who like walking.

In 2019, the Kladruby area along the Elbe River was entered into the UNESCO List as a region for the breeding and training of ceremonial carriage horses in Kladruby nad Labem. The National Stud in Kladruby nad Labem is best reached by car. Parking is available in a newly built, spacious car park. There is also a bus stop in front of the Stud Farm’s building. The main visiting season is from April to the end of October, when it is open every day except for Monday.
